I recently heard about the movie adaption being developed that was announced in March of 2018 (initially optioned in 2016). I have lots of thoughts to share about it, and am very excited for when it eventually comes out! I think this is my favourite fantasy series, without a doubt. TIMING Since her post on Instagram there has been no news publicly, and I know fans have recently been wanting updates as the comments on that Instagram post by Sarah is full of comments from days and weeks ago. However I don’t think anyone should worry. Because that update, likely the first draft of the script too, was from February/March of 2018. They still needed to take the time to perfect a draft of the script, Sarah was giving feedback and revisions. That takes time, and they have to find the right visionary director for the project not to mention casting. There is still a ways to go, sometimes these things take a while, other times not too long. However as a fan of DUNE, I know what it’s like to wait for an adaption (looking forward to December! ). But the timing of things feels very appropriate to me. Legendary got the rights to DUNE in 2016, no director till 2017 and script writing didn’t start till 2018, and the film isn’t out till late 2020. So really, this just means they have been taking the past two years to 1. work on a really good draft of the script early in the process and 2. find the right crew for the project. Once they have the director they can basically launch into pre-production and casting and all that. Sarah herself said that the people behind it, Constantine and Temp, are working to assemble the right team. But now let’s look at the current state of the film industry thanks to this virus. Pretty much everything is on hold and backed up, so it’s probably a good thing it’s in the stage it is, so nothing is really being held up. They can still work on perfecting a script. But what happens after the virus is settled? People out of work want to work, people need new projects, and A Court of Thorns and Roses could be that new fresh project for them! As fans we just have to continue our excitement for the film. EDIT - This website here outlines approximately how long the production of a film lasts. Currently ACOTAR is in the developmental stage, and it says here that can take up to a number of years, so things do appear to be normal. We can only hope that after the virus is over that we can get some new announcements and the developmental stage can move into pre-production WHY IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT FANTASY FILM SERIES I mean I think all of us know pretty well, just how great of a fantasy series it is. But there were some things I think that really make this series particularly compelling for a big screen adaption... Each instalment has a unique plot theme, it’s never repetitive: ACOTAR has the curse and the trials to break it. ACOMAF has a sort of heist thing going on. ACOWAR has well, war! A relatable and genuine female lead: One thing that really bothers me is a female character who only has worth in regard to her love interest, or who is advertised as a strong lead but is either a Marry Sue or devoid of all feminine quality and an emotionless blob. These are things no one enjoys in a lead regardless, but with Feyre she is both feminine and a badass, proves her own individual worth, and trains to master her skills. She’s a genuine character who I really think all audiences can find sympathy for and relate to, root for. Compelling and Entrancing World Building: This series has very interesting world building, from the world’s long history, to the religions, to the governmental systems, to the sually it will be stunning to see come to life on screen, and for fantasy fans it will be exciting to delve into these elements a bit deeper with the film aspect of things. New fans can be drawn in: With Sarah’s writing you have little hints of things that will be expanded on later in big ways, and for someone who hasn’t read the books not only will they be greeted by an exciting plot, with beautiful imagery, but they will experience exciting twists as well for the first time. Not to mention the amazing romance. Which will hook new people. DIRECTORS Since a big first step when it comes to the film at this point is getting a director on board, I thought before we get to the casting recommendations, I talk about the directors I think would be a really good fit. For me I just want the right person for the job, whoever that is. But I do feel like a female director might be best. Though I am not against a male director either. However as it turns out, while I did my searching, there are only two names that stood out as a good fit... PATTY JENKINS - She would fit this well, and is a really well respected name. She has some experience in fantasy-esquire stories with Wonder Women so I don’t think a transition to something more in the fantasy realm would be too hard. She also has proven herself to be able to direct great action, which is super important. Plus we know she can direct a great female lead. She really likes the psychology behind characters and I think that would be really a good fit considering the depth and trauma the characters experience, fight through, and evolve from NIKI CARO - I think she would be a really really good choice. She directed the new Mulan movie, which is much more fantasy then Wonder Women. So we know she has some good experience with the genre. Plus she also proves she is capable of directing great action! Can again handle a powerful leading female, which is important for Feyre. Also from her filmography she has considerable expensive in the romance genre so that’s also a huge bonus. She’s done drama as well so that element she can cover when it comes to the emotions of characters and well, all the drama. Feel free to share your director suggestions! These are two that I really really would want to see. FAN CASTING Ok, so this is just for fun. Though some I feel very strongly about. These are unknown/fairly unknown actors in the grand scheme of things but I think that’s actually good. Some names you may find rather familiar though. One thing to keep in mind, is I picked these based on acting ability, and appropriate age. Nobody pushing 40 here lol Feyre - Kristine Froseth - She is my number one choice because I feel like she looks exactly like Feyre in my head. She is just at the start of her career, but has already showed a lot of promise and has been in heavy stuff like Looking for Alaska (2019) and The Society (2019). She even shows some action/huntress/warrior potential with her role in Prey (2019). Barbara Palvin - This one I have seen a number of people suggest, and I think her age is appropriate enough and she looks young. So I am not at all against this. Though I could see her playing one of the other sisters to be honest. But the only real worry I have is that her only acting credit I could find was in Hercules (2014), so I don’t know if she has enough experience. But I am definitely open to it. Tamlin - Dominic Sherwood - I will admit I am not practically married to this pick like I am my number ones for Feyre and Rhys, however I do really really like it. He’s 30, looks a bit younger then that, so he is appropriate age wise since Tamlin looks to be in his late twenties at the oldest. He can do blond hair and green eyes for sure. Most people know him from Shadowhunters (2016-2019), and so I think he is able to be likeable but also have that side that makes you want to slap Tamlin. Luke Bracey - He isn’t really new to the scene, but as he’s 30 his age is appropriate though sometimes he looks a bit old, he’s blond and looks good with longer hair. He has had experiences in action war flicks, and was in a romance film called The Best of Me (2014) based on a Nicholas Sparks book. So really he is well rounded as an actor, looks the part, and I think could do a good job. Though looking a bit too old and being on the tall side compared to other cast suggestions does make me sceptical. Rhysand - Mena Massoud - This is the hardest role to determine, and I think most feel that way. So I will spend a bit more time talking about my process on why Mena is my number one and ultimate pick for Rhys. The two names I see most are Toni Mahfud and Sean O’Pry. The problem with Toni even though visually he is perfection, is that he is a model and therefore couldn’t play him in a film. From all my digging I couldn’t find any acting background (though he is an artist so I highly suggest you check out his painting! ). Then there is Sean O’Pry and while also looking the part, and having more acting experience then Toni, it’s still limited to two music videos from a few years ago and then very small background roles for the most part. He did audition for the role in Fifty Shades of Grey, but aside from the role not having much depth to begin with (no offence to anyone who likes it), he even said himself that he didn’t get it do to the acting ability. With Rhysand ultimately I felt like it had to be someone who does have acting experience, range, as well as the looks. Then I started looking at actors, and when Mena Massoud came to mind, I was sold almost immediately. He’s 28 so he’s the appropriate age, and even looks a bit younger. You probably know of him because of Aladdin (2019) but he’s had experience with thrillers and dramas too. So he has experience with darker genres and I think can really tap into that and expand on it, showing his range. But even just from watching Aladdin there are subtle expressions and gestures etc. that to me really felt like there was a Rhysand in there waiting to come out. He checks all the boxes: acting experience, age, ’s literally perfect! I honestly couldn’t find anyone else I felt really fit the role. No one I felt this strongly about. CONCLUSION So I want to here your thoughts too! Is there a director you’d really like? Other character fan cast suggestions? Are you excited for a film adaption? Sarah’s involvement is what gives me faith:)

For all the blinded Disney fanboys that are where's mushu? This isn't like the original what are you doing to my childhood? Let me remind you all that they are making a reboot of Mulan, not a remake of the animated one. This story is closer to the original (Ballad of Mulan. If you don't want your childhood ruined, just don't watch it. There's nothing stopping him from taking Mulan as a concubine tho. even if she is not queen they can still be together. Just saying. Mulan free movie. People should stop looking at this movie to compare it to the animated one. Yes they are both a story based on the same girl and her achievements, but this is an adaptation of the ballad of Mulan, not an adaptation/live action of the animated movie. Therefore it should be experienced and percieved as a completely different movie.
